Show Us Your Shields
Come to this thread with your shield, or on it. In spite of the shield being the principal item of kit for warriors throughout most of European history (can't speak of the East, though), we often overlook this wonderful item to focus on the killing instruments, or the impressive coats of maille and harness of plate.

So, be they round Saxon or Viking shields, tiny bucklers, flat top kites, or what have you, I say we should post up all the shields we have!

I look forward to seeing what members post here :)

Phil, that's a beautiful shield. Can you share a little about it? Did you build and paint it yourself?

I have about a billion bucklers these days of all kinds, but most are just bare steel. This Purpleheart one is the only one that's been painted:

I can contribute a couple of my Bronze Age shields. First a Nipperwiese-class bronze shield from Long Wittenham, England, about 15 inches in diameter:

Next a wooden shield copied from that found at Cloonlara, Ireland, about 20 inches in diameter:

It's a single piece of wood, stained with red ochre.

Oh, and if you've never seen a Roman scutum before, here's mine!

Enjoy,

Matthew
One more...small buckler.
Here's my latest one...

Gods above, Phil! Those are some beautiful shields. Did you do that yourself, or was it a custom job?

Tony, I like the shield design. Huginn and Muninn seem to have brought a friend along :)

I've posted this pic before showing off the sword, but here's my heater shield from Mercenary's Tailor.

Thanks for comment Darrin. As with your shield... 3 objects seem to work better than 2 and it never hurts to carry a spare Raven! :D

i've got a few more around here too unpictured and a few unfinished
Here is my targe. The weapons pictured with it are mine, except for the dirk. This shield was given to me by friends and was used, at one point, as the model for a lapel pin issued by the Loch Norman Highland Games. The tartan tacked to it is Clan Keith, longtime enemy of the Clan Gunn. We signed a treaty in 1978.
