Naval Cutlass, where to buy?
Hey guys,

i'm looking to buy a naval cutlass that is light weight (yes i know a lot of cutlasses are heavy, but i want this as light as a cutlass can get.) and it should curve up to a point and not taper.

also it must be single edged, (as most cutlasses are, but i bought one that looked promising but it was double edged at the end :()

anyway it must be no more than 33" for it is a cutlass, not a saber. (or it could be a saber, just shorter)

heres a pic of something very similar to what i want to buy.[/u]

sorry guys, i'm new here and i just figured out that i posted in the wrong section.
That's basically a U.S. model 1860 with a slightly longer blade. If you don't mind a cutlass-sized version, there are several replicas of that one on the market.
where would one find said replicas?
all right, i'm looking for something like the one on the bottom of this page,

http://hometown.aol.com/machood/uscutlasses.html
Here is a replica:

I am assuming you want a replica, but if you are after an antique I can send you a PM with some dealer sites.

Cold Steel has some cutlasses / sabers that might be along the lines of what you're looking for:

I don't know anything about them as far as quality etc but I came across them via the Reviews on this site.

For general information, the original US 1860 cutlass and especially its French equivalent (with full steel guard) are light and fast swords! Their appearance is deceiving; the solid guard balances the blade very well.

The Cold Steel cutlass is a copy of the Dutch Klewang cutlass/US 1917. It is well made and looks good but is ill-balanced, blade heavy, as it lacks the original's distal taper.
would you happen to have a link?

i cant seem to find it.

- thanks
Try Legendary Arms, they have a decent website and I believe they have repro M1860 cutlasses there. I don't have the link but it should come up on a general search.
Here you have a link for example
http://www.militarydisplaysonline.com/Authent...12-19.html

French cutlass
http://www.piratemerch.com/french-pirate-mari...i-386.html

Both are solely right-handed. Personally I prefer earlier cutlass types, 17th to mid-18th century. Check an additional info link here http://www.gentlemenoffortune.com/swords.htm .

If you like to go higher-end I strongly recommend on Old Dominion Forge, check here the review on one of his hangers http://www.myArmoury.com/review_odf_hanger.html .
thanks guys, all really good links.

but i'm looking for something that is not double edged at the end as most of those are, and i'm looking for it to be well balenced.

the one in the link i posted last was the closet i've ever seen to what i want.

any idea where i could find it?

- thanks.

Zak,
Did you look at the link I posted? The link is to Kult of Athena and features a replica of the US M1860 Naval Cutlass, which is the sword pictured in your last link. The M1860 is a single edged cutlass, but it does have a false edge (ie., it is double edged at the tip). You will be hard-pressed to find a repro cutlass that does not have a false edge.

oh no i didn't see it, thank you very much.

but i think i'm going to have one custom made by arms and amour.
Why don't you want a false edge, BTW?
cuz i want it to be like a cutlass.

not a saber.
Zak,
Cutlasses did have false edges, though. The presence or absence of a false edge is not something that distinguishes a cutlass from a saber. Not to get too off track, but I am not sure that there is really a distinction to be made between a cutlass and a saber. I guess it depends on how you define "saber".

Jonathan
Good to know. thank you. :)

but still, i want a cutlass with no false edge because that's what i want. i don't know why. maybe it reminds me of a rapier too much. bottom line, i don't know, but i know i want one edge.
Cutlasses also known as 'Short SABERs', especially by Royal Navy.
