If those links are butted then it is no wonder that you keep losing them. You need 2mm wire for the links to hold together under any sort of stress. You have three options: You could get out a soldering iron and spend a few weeks closing every link; you could stitch the mail between two layers of padding; or you could wear a rigid breastplate over the top. The only other choice is to scrap it and buy some riveted mail.

Ahhhhh.... that might be a part of the problem. Lessee here, you have an ID of about 3/8" or a bit more, but wire of only ~19 gauge thickness. No wonder you are having problems! That wire is far too thin, at least when butted, to work really well (now, if it had been overlapped and riveted, it would have been tough and well within historical parameters). But for butted construction, the 19 ga. in that large a ring practically pulls apart under its own weight!

Save your shekels and get a breast and back plate - or build yourself a brigadine or the like. But save the hauberk! One day, when ambition overcomes sense you might want to pull it apart, overlap the rings yourself, and then punch and rivet them and reweave into something stronger and more historically correct.
