MRL's new catalog is available as a download on their site. I don't see much here to get excited about, but there a couple of things that at least made me take notice. One was a new generic spearhead, better than the old version with the thick midrib. The other was this Maximilian-style helmet from their "Tudors" collection. It's interesting, but the brass annoys me. I wonder if this is brass applique or plated steel...maybe it's possible to sand it off or otherwise remove it. If it's brass it could be subdued with ammonia fuming if it's not easily removed (soldered, maybe?). They're asking $345. If the past is any guide, that'll drop pretty quickly. If it gets down to $250 it might be worth the work it would require to line and strap it in the style of 1520. What do y'all think?

Over time I've come to develop an appreciation of Maximillian armour. I say if your an armor fiend you should wait for the price to drop and then turn it into your own art project. Say does anyone know a good biography of Maximillian himself? I cant find one.

Whatever that is ? It probably means that they have brass plated on nickel to make it bright and shiny. This will make it more difficult to remove. I think , without actually having it in front of me to makes sure, that I would probably gun blue the whole helmet and then cut back the finish to one that is acceptable. The gun blue will dull down the brass quite a bit. It could well be that these are actually brass, not steel, that has been plated.
The lifting peg is also on the wrong side, but that may not annoy you as it would me.
This might be one of those items that would be fun to play with, just to see what you can do with it. I did see one of the older ones that had been etched and then russeted and then cut back and cleaned , it looked very nice !

EDIT: Of course, if the fittings are actually plated steel, then the brass may simply burn off with a blowtorch .
