NW Iranian Iron Age I Downswept Pommel Swords
Dear Friends,

One of my friends is offering me a downswept pommel sword, the sixth that I know of, besides the four above swords, one was published on Page 134 of Antiquities from Europe and the Near East in the Collection of The Lord MacAlpine of Spring Green. This is the only published example of this style sword that I have in my collection. Please let me know if you have any additional sources.

The bottom sword in the above pictures has an iron blade. The MacAlpine sword is all bronze.

Anyone with comments about these swords?

Did something organic fit in the hollows in the pommels?

Dear Geoff,

Not on any of the six examples that I have seen, four of which are in my collection, one published and one presently for sale. As I mentioned earlier, these swords are very much akin to the Ear Pommel swords with the ears perpendicular to the tang. All of the hilts of both style sword were cast onto the blade, both bronze and iron blades. All would have had a much lowere tin content, about 5% +/- as opposed to the normal bronze with 10% or more alloy tin.
