Here's some images of a mongolian helmet with scale's part of the way up (I think?), unless these are plates attached to the helmet rather than scales? I'm not to good at judging armour. So, please correct me, if I'm wrong. Worried Confused

The paintings all show square scails but the surviving examples and reproductions all show circular, why is that?

The extant examples are of Eastern influence may be the reason.

Here's another image of one of these helms, by Mathis Nithardt (Grunewald).

I think it's also interesting for the clear depiction of the padded garment. The sword and scabbard are interesting too.

The description is:

Quote:
Fighting man of the late 14th century wearing a bascinet with aventail, a quilted coat, vambraces and iron gauntlets. His sword is in his hand. Detail from an altar-piece by Mathis Nithardt (Grunewald). Unterlinden Museum, Colmar.

Edit: though it depicts a late 14th century man, the artist lived in the late 15th and early 16th century.

The design has remained virtually unchanged for three thousand years. Note this reconstruction of a Middle Eastern (Nuzi)girpizu from the Bronze Age.

Could this helmet from a Derrick print of Irish cavalry be depicting a scale helmet?

Maybe but I'm thinking those helmets are made like jacks of plate. Of course, that's really just scale sewn into a sandwich of fabric, making it pretty simliar technologicaly. It's a shame none have been found.
