I am looking for pictures of both North African flintlocks and original English doglocks.

The story is there is a very small museum in town here that has a crude North African gun that is labelled as an English doglock. The bad part is that the person that donated it "says" it was authenticated by the Smithsonian and it even says that on the tag.

If you have seen the N African pieces, you know the style I am speaking of. The lock and castings are poorly done, the barrel is secured to the stock with wire wrap, the butt of the stock is flared out like a fishtail....

I know the person that runs the museum but he needs more proof than my word. So that is why I am trying to find some pictures of both to show him the differences. I have a couple around here, but I could certainly use more.

Thanks in advance.

I will try to take a picture of the gun in the museum over the next couple days to show you what I am talking about.

Hi Michael,

try www.arsenal.de. They have some north african snaplocks called 'moukhala'. Look to the right under 'Arikanisches und Fernöstliches' and Vorderlader (muzzle loaders). Unfortunately the site is in german an d most of the guns are 19th century, but the have some of the common styles. And the site also offers quite a few other interisting arms as well.
