Folks,

Can I get some period images of flags, standards, penants, banners, etc.? I'm looking into something at the moment.

I know of a couple, but they might be too far into the Renaissance. What period exactly are you looking for? Also, are you looking for period artwork (easier to find and probably what you mean by period images) or actual surviving flags (harder to find)?

If it's period art, we have images in our Great Battles series articles. In fact, all five published articles in that series have at least one image showing a flags/etc. Other of our articles may have images that could work for you, too.

Here are just a few of what's in those articles:

Chad,

I'm not looking for actual surviving flags, but rather illustrations as you've included. My main area of interest is the Crusading era, but I can't imagine that flags and the like changed that much during the course of the period, save for the evolving designs and arms on them, which isn't what I'm looking for anyways.

Try the Maciejowski Bible. For example, here is the return of Jephthah:

the Bejaminites of Gibeah

Hi Craig,
Here you go................... http://www.allstates-flag.com/fotw/flags/crusade.html
Many of the crusader flags are reproduced here including the various flags of Jerusalam. You have to add to this the flags of the various Orders of Military Knighthood which are also at the FOTW site.
Happy hunting !
