Just finished up this Irish La Tene sword/dagger today out of some extra bits and pieces I had around the shop. The guard was originally roughed out for a gladius, but was too narrow. Way too pretty of a piece of wood to just waist and the pommel was taken from the same piece of lumber then. The grip has been bouncing around for a couple of years and had at one time been going on an earlier irish blade that broke. Even the boxwood was from an area in the wood that wouldn't have been useable for larger hilt pieces. Originally I wasn't even going to have the boxwood and the pommel was just one solid piece of walnut, but I was having some issues with things and this was clearly the best solution.
It is a welcomed little treat to myself since most of the things I do anymore have to be sold.
Yeah I really have a growing thing for the more interesting woods. Really happy with the way some apple is turning out for me right now, and considering using some olive on one of my next swords.
