hi, this discussion is very interesting because i've been thinking about it for long time. i have some old pommels and i'm sure that the pommel from the small-sword is hollow inside. some of pommels like that is carved and is visible a tang going through. the same about pommels from walloon swords. i've got one and there is missing one screw for attaching the hilt. walls of that pommel are about 4mm. the same about small sword pommel.

i've seen some hollow XI century pommels in the shape of brazil-nut. they were made of 3 sheets of iron(about 1mm thick)soldered together.

i've seen some halves of late medieval pommels made of brass. they looks made of thin brass sheet. probably these pommels were made of two brass halves soldered together and filled by the any substance to protect it by the squeeze.

there is some claymore pommels made of thin iron sheet soldered together.

there is lot of pommels hollow inside but there is lot of pommels made from solid iron block(made from some pieces welded together).

i was making medieval pommel (hollow inside) by closing the pipe from both sides. this gave me iron ball with the walls as the thickness of the pipe walls. from this ball a was making different shapes, for example disc pommel. but the medieval blacksmith were excelent in welding and probably it was very easy to them to make iron pommel welded from 3 parts. ring and two sides...
