Need opinions on an archer's sallet -- myArmoury.com

I have bought an archer's sallet as illustrated in following photos:

I have used it, and it is very usefull during employing of bow.

The opinion I want to ask you is if this type of sallet (with hinged side plate) is an historic type o is a modern interpretation?

And, when it was in use, during last years of XIV century, or later?

That IS an interesting feature.
I'd like to know too, is there a historical precedent?

Mind you, there seems to be loads of variation in helmet designs
throughout history so this one looks highly probable, maybe
for someone taking a high anchor-point instead of a collar-level one
which I take when I practice with a helmet on.

I think they have one like it in the Wallace Collection though I am going off memeory as they do not allow pictures and they did not have pictures fo sale of the armour either.....

There is some historical precedent for it. After Randall's post, I checked my Wallace collection catalogues. Sure enough, there is a similar sallet with a hinged cheekpiece.

According to Sir James Mann:

"The hinged cheek-piece is almost certainly a later adaptation, possibly for use by an archer or even a musketeer."

The helm is dated to circa 1470 and is thought to be of Milanese make.

I do not have a copy anymore at my disposal.

I doubt it was for a gunner in the 15th as not much good to aim so whats the point might as well have a blindfold on Big Grin

Looking at a photo from lateral side, the helm is very similar to the one of Wallace collection.

About general shape of the sallet, is not similar (at least slightly) to this one? The one of the soldier on the left.

It is similar witht eh one from the pistoia alterpiece but if you are asking for a historical example that one from1 470 is the only one I know of with the side that opens like that all the ones in the pistoia alter are solid it seems. You can make a guess they had them as similar helmets existed but you are leaving the time frame of the one example so far found if you go 14th century. It is up to you and how much leeway you wish to give yourself in accuracy.
