Dear Friends,
The Sickle Sword originated in ancient Egypt during the 2nd Milennium BC. The name of the sword was Khopesh and examples are kept in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
The Egyptians under Pharoah Tutmoses III created an Empire that included the coastal areas of Sinai, Canaan and perhaps as far north as Lebanon and Syria.
The Canaanites during the MBII (1900-1550 BC) adopted many of the Egyptian styles of weapons as they were much more advanced than the locally produced styles.
Anyone interested in the weapons of this era should find a copy Yigal Yadin's The Art of Warfare in Biblical Lands published in 1962. I have added to a lengthy thread of discussion on this topic on the Sword Forum, go to: http://forums.swordforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27829
I have posted photos of my Canaanite weapons and a sickle sword for your edification.I collect swords and bayonets dated WWI back to the Bronze Age from the US and Europe and ancient swords and other weapons from Eurasia. I participate in many historical forums for the study of ancient history and weapons. I am happy to share what expertise I have. John Piscopo
