John, excellent bibliographies, all! Some great books (and a bunch I'm not familiar with!) listed, thanks for posting them. Timely, too, as I've been looking to improve my ancient Chinese section; I'd already purchased Yang Hong's Weapons in Ancient China recently (and am eagerly waiting for it, it looks like a gem), and I'm sure I'll be referring to your list again.
Best,

Dear Justin,
Yang Hong's book is very good and has the advantage of being translated into English. The text is very good but you will be disappointed in the paucity of illustrated weapons. A complimentary book in Chinese that will be invaluable is:
Dong, Cheng & Zhong Shao-yi. Ancient Chinese Weapons: A Collection of Pictures. The Chinese People's Liberation Army Publishing House. 1990. Chinese Language. ISBN: 5065-0646-7 Encyclopedic in 303 pages. Very useful for any collector, a good section on minority group weapons also. A Collection of Pictures
The book is not particularly expensive and is available from Paragon. I would recommend that you go to their website and order it today. You will not be disappointed upon its arrival.

Dear John,
Yeah, I spotted that one straightaway, but I got sidetracked before I could look for it at Paragon. I can't seem to find it now, though. I'll keep an eye out for it in the future, though.

I am new to the forum and have not read through the extensive postings, so please forgive me if I repeat someone else's posts.
There are many good books among those listed here, but there is one with which I am familiar that has some significant errors. Allen's "Authentication of Ancient Chinese Bronzes" was written with the best intent, but by a man who faced the daunting task of trying to become an expert in Chinese bronzes and porcelain. Quite a job.
In his book, there are scientific errors, and some of the conditions sited as good evidence of antiquity are now known to be largely invalid. Similarly, some of the methods Mr. Allen describes as unreliable are actually among the best methods for identifying characteristics consistent or inconsistent with the proposed age.
The problem is that any hard science can be innocently misinterpreted or important features missed, and good scientific techniques may not be suited to all metals. You have to choose your scientific technique and your scientist carefully. Finding someone with extensive experience in the field of your specific antiquity is vitally important.
At this time, the best combination of tests for most Chinese bronzes (and many other metal artifacts) consists of: 1) a thorough visual examination by an experienced specialist in the field of that type and age of item, 2) radiography, 3) metallurgical analysis by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA or 'microprobe') of a solid metal sample, and 4) a metallographic examination of a solid sample. I must stress that this authentication requires a combination of tests and examinations. All too often, I examine forgeries that have incorporated pieces of ancient metal at the locations most likely to be sampled. The microprobe and metallography may come back fine, but a radiograph can reveal the deception.
Remember that a radiographer trained to read modern materials may innocently misidentify characteristic of ancient metals. I have seen pastiche constructions identified as repairs, modern repairs identified as ancient, and normal construction techniques listed as abnormalities. Again, chose your scientist carefully.
For those wishing to learn more about metallographic examination, Metallography and Microstructure of Ancient and Historic Metals, by David A. Scott (Getty Conservation Institute, 1991, ISBN 0-89236-195-6), is a good book.
Mr. Allen's book was written with good intent and a true desire to protect people from purchasing a forgery, and I am in no way speaking ill of the man, his intent, or his business. I simply wish to report that some of the science in his book on Chinese bronze authentication is weak.

This would have been a lot easier if you could read Chinese. But there are some other good books in English that aren't mentioned here. I'll come up with a list shortly to post here.

Isn't there a way to get them translated. I think some of them already are.
