Hello,

The International Swordfighting and Martial Arts Convention continues to grow as we enter into our 7th year of bringing together the finest instructors from around the world! After making some exciting new additions the web site is up at http://artofcombat.org/public/thespis/Convention/aocflyer.htm

This year will have all the wonderful opportunities that we offered last year as well as some new experiences planned, making it the workshop not to be missed! It will be held in Lansing, Michigan on the first weekend of August as always. This year we are adding a 4th day to the workshop, so ISMAC will be running August 3rd to the 6th.

- AMAZING VARIETY OF CLASSES with over 60 classes during the four days, the most opportunity at a WMA workshop. ISMAC let’s you choose how in depth you want to study; you can take 6 different 1.5 hour classes per day to get a taste of a variety of weapons or focus all your energy into one area with a 9 hour Master Class Block and every combination in between.

- ALL SKILL LEVELS will find great classes catered to your abilities. As you saw last year, there are now 5 classes per time slot to choose from all weekend! These are broken up into two blocks of regular classes running concurrently with two blocks of 3 hour master classes and a block of 4 ½ hour Maestro classes. Check the website to see how last year’s schedule was laid out. This will give you an idea of the great variety of classes that will be offered. You will also find descriptions of each type of class you can take.

-MASTER CLASS BLOCKS give you the opportunity to take 3 master classes in a row that all share a common theme so you are working on the same principle all day. Last year saw blocks concentrating on Leverage in the early Italian School, “Fuhlen” in the German School and Defense in Italian Rapier play. Look for some exciting new blocks this year.

- PRIVATE LESSONS with the instructors will be offered again. These were offered at ISMAC 2003 for the first time at any WMA workshop and they were a huge success, so we are excited to continue offering this opportunity for personal one on one training.

- TOURNAMENTS. We will once again have a Rapier/Smallsword tournament on Saturday night and a Singlestick tournament on Sunday. On Friday night we will be adding a KNIFE tournament for the first time, which will be sponsored and run by Raven Arts Academy. More details will be posted on the website soon.

- DEMOS AND PRESENTATIONS will happen during the lunch breaks everyday.

If you are a serious Western Martial Artist, then ISMAC is the place for you. We work hard all day and play harder every night. Come share in the fun of the infamous statue and try one of Lansing’s famous pig sandwiches while learning tons about Western Martial Arts!

Sincerely,
Jared Kirby

Hello,

Registration is now open for ISMAC and most class descriptions are now online!

As you have come to expect from this workshop, we never stop improving (although it gets harder every year!), so we have a couple more additions to let you know about.

On Thursday night, please join us for a semi-formal dinner with the instructors. We have made reservations at the Radisson and you can sign up for it during the registration process. The menu is online and the meal will be $25/person. You will need to register in advance to join us for the festivities. I heard there may even be some entertainment for the evening as there are a few people who have a score to settle with Cecil Longino after the 4-W workshop Happy

The other exciting addition is a new way to register for the workshop, You will now have three options. For the intermediate and advanced participants we have a new Easy Pass, so you will be able to pay one flat fee and take any class you would like.

-Normal registration is still available for $110 (early registration) and then you can add the maestro/master classes of your choice.

-The Master Class pass is $325 which includes your registration fee and any master classes you want to take.

-The Maestro Class pass is $400 and includes your registration fee and any maestro or master classes you would like to take.

You will need to sign up for the advanced classes you when you are registering. Please know your limitations, and only sign up for classes you will be taking (you are required to participate in the classes that you sign up for). At ISMAC these advanced classes are limited in size so you get more out of the class than at any other WMA workshop. Every year there is a waiting list of people that want to be in the Master/Maestro classes and it would be a shame for them to miss out when there is an open spot.

Lastly, don’t forget to make your reservations at the Radisson early. The hotel fills quickly and all the after hours fun happens there. If it’s your first time at ISMAC, don’t forget to have someone take you to the infamous statue!

See ya in August,
Jared Kirby

FYI, several of the Master/Maestro classes at ISMAC are almost full. When each one closes we will post it on the Bulletin Board.
Remember, the early registration deadline is only a few days away; after that the registration fee goes up and the EZ pass option will disappear.

Take care,

If you are attending ISMAC but don't have a roommate, the unique hotel forum will let you chat with others in the same predicament. This makes it easy to connect with other participants and save a little money. Go to the website at http://artofcombat.org/public/thespis/index01.htm and click on hotel info. You will see the link to “hotel forum” and just post your message or respond to someone already there!

Hello,

This is a reminder for those coming to ISMAC who haven't registered yet. The last registration deadline is coming up quickly. If you are planning to attend, save some money and get your registration in by July 23rd. After that the price goes up $50.

Almost half of the Master/Maestro Classes are now full and closed. For the most part, the remainder of the classes have only one or two spots left in them, so in many cases it takes only one more registration to close them. Please check the online schedule and the bulletin board for the most recent closures. http://artofcombat.org/public/thespis/Convention/aocflyer.htm

We'll see you in three week!

Sincerely,
Jared Kirby

Hello,

I want to say thank you to all the instructors of ISMAC 2006. This year saw some very new classes (dueling shields, polearms and pirates oh my) as well as new approaches to old favorites (a whole class designed by the participants). You are truly the cream of WMA teachers and it is wonderful to have you all together in one place; even if it’s just for a weekend.

I especially want to thank the participants traveling from around the US, Canada and abroad who made this year the largest ISMAC ever! It was a wonderful and exhausting weekend, but 2006 saw the learning curve go through the roof. I saw things this weekend that I never could have imaged 7 years ago. I look forward to hearing more detailed reviews of the workshop from ya’ll.

For me, it was a truly inspiring year, so thank you all. We have already started work on ISMAC 2007 and I look forward to seeing new faces mixed with the familiar ones. The infamous statue awaits you!

Take care!
