The term "dagger" typically refers to a knife-length pointed weapon. From good ol' Websters:

There are no hard and fast rules, but pointy and under 18 inches total length you could easily call a dagger. Around 2 feet to 3 feet could be a "short sword." Anything longer a "sword."
