I have a bevor with holes along the upper edge looking exactly as on some 'black' sallets. I am guess its for attaching padding to the inside of the bevor, but i have also heard that such holes are made for sowing on cloth outside the armour. Does anyone know if this is something that was done? Cos I cant really see any reason to add cloth to a normal, polished, piece of armour, unless for just keeping the helmets visor from scratching the surface.

In Edge and Paddock's Arms & Armor of the Medieval Knight, there is a picture of a sallet covered in red velvet (page 121), so I see no reason why this could not have been done on a bevor as well. I don't really use armour much, so someone with more experience can probably give you better answers as to why this might be done. Personally, I just like the idea of slightly different colors and textures.

I don't have much time to add to this, but I'll show you these:

Here is a topic that shows examples of the "Black" sallet type. The text of the first post discusses the holes.

Here is a topic that shows examples of fabric-covered helms

Covering a helm with fabric would both add a decorative element to the piece as well as offer protection against the elements.
