New sword in progress
Just got some pictures of my in progress sword (from Jason Dingledine, the maker) and thought I would share:

And finally:

It is inspired by a sword in Records of the Medieval Sword. For fun, I'll let you guess which one
(I'll add more pictures as I get them).

Way to go Jason!

I am almost certain that it is the XVII.8 (page 116) or the XIV.8 (page 124)-- or possibly something in between :D

David

PS Thanks for sharing the pics-- I look forward to seeing what it reall is.
I totally screwed that up, thus ruining what had the potential to be a remarkably mediocre joke! What I actually meant to type was:

"I am almost certain that it is the XVII.8 (page 166) or the XIV.8 (page 124)-- or possibly something in between.

Ah well, so much for a life in comedy.

David
No comment - yet :-)
One of the next steps is adding a fuller. (That helps narrow it down some).

I'll put up some more pictures when I get them - hopefully next week - it should be ready for heat treating by then.

Next picture -

This one is after the bevels were forged in, the fuller was rough ground and the bevels ground in.

I have one with the hilt fittings as well, but I'll wait a day or so, in case you are inclined to try to match the blade with the inspiration from Records.

The third picture makes it a little easier to make a guess, but I'm still not sure I'm equal to the task. I definitely couldn't guess from the first two!
This one gives it away, I think.

With the forged but not yet finished fittings in place to give an idea of what the finished sword will look like.

Ok I am guessing XVI.3 from Records. Am I right? Beautiful sword even if I am not , congrats Gordon.

Thanks James. Yes, that is the one.
It is "inspired by" rather than a reproduction since Jason had no hard data on the sword beyond what is in Records.

I had been thinking about an XVI for awhile and decided on this one. Jason had been planning to make a version of this sword on his own, so it fit together very well. She just went through heat treating and should be in my hands in a couple of weeks, I think.

question
Why does the fuller go into the tang? Does this matter in terms of balance or structural strength of the blade?

I don't know exactly why, but there are more extreme historical examples out there.

I'm really curious to get an update on this piece.

Was it completed? Where's the pics? We need eye candy! Grin.
Well, as Jason was doing some final grinding and polishing he discovered a crack near the tip.
He could not let the sword come to me in less than perfect condition, so he had to start over from scratch.
I believe he is close to the heat treat stage on the new version.
This was actually good for me since he basically had an entire sword's worth of practice, and he got some feedback from Peter J. on the sword that he was able to incorporate as well.

The new version is a bit wider, Jason says think of a sword made for war rather than a civilian issue version. I'm pretty excited to see the new pictures - hopefully I can provide some soon.
