I was chatting about bucklers not long ago, and Talhoffer's illustrations came up. Now, no one in that conversation had seen an actual Talhoffer style buckler, but I suspect this is the place to ask. I did a search on talhoffer and buckler, came up with a number of threads to read later, but no pictures. Do any of these survive? Does anyone have a picture?

OK, Does anyone know if this type of buckler has a particular name so I can search for that?

If I remember my Talhoffer correctly I think he just calls them "kleine schild", but I can check that out for you and get back to you with a more definitive answer. I'm curious as too the possibility of any surviving specimens too.
EDIT: I just checked my transcription of Alte Armatur und Ringkunst and in that particular manuscript he simply calls the tool "buckler".

Hehe. Seeing as to how Talhoffer in general is quite nasty when it comes to techniques and the demise of the enemy he must have thought: "Liiiike a glooooooooooooove!" when he first saw those himself. 
They so utterly fit the character of his fighting. This is, after all, the man with the gurgelstich ("gurgling thrust").

I imagine that the spikes are more for better sword catching than for bashing, though...

I've always thought so, too, though they'll definately do a number in the bashing department.

With one of these the sword is almost supperfluous  You could do all the damage you want with just the shield 
Very attractive design there!

Yea, that whole site has eye candy.
The Maximillion stuff is cool, but luckly me its in euros... I'm too lazy to check the current exchange rate.. so its ok to look for now :P

THANK YOU ALEX! That's a cool image..... it does lack the spikes, but it gives a great indication of what it would look like. The original sketch seems to have a slight angle on the boss... like a teardrop facing a tiny bit upward.... But even so, this is gorgous. Thank you much.
If anyone happens across an original in a museum anytime in the next year or so, please let us all know, and snap a shot of it.

Well at least today ! Info thanks to the nice little " Widget " software that comes with MAC X Tiger O.S. software: Conversion tool that can give you all sort of various units conversions; currency, temperature, weight, etc ...
