Aye, Chris .... I guess you'll just have to send it to me to photograph for you !
I'm sure I'd send it right back in a month or three ;-)

HA! Well, Mac, maybe we can swap for a while. I've always wanted to see that Walter Allen hilt E.B. made for you up close ;)

Many thanks for posting these additional photos of the original -- great to see them!

And another thing; the bars seem to terminate pretty far on the "front" side of the pommel (on the original). Is this normal?

Henrik -- good eye on where the side guards hit the pommel! This wasn't as visible in the earlier photos, but can be seen clearly in the ones Mac posted. It appears to me that the outboard side of the guard is bent forward more that the inboard side, making me believe that what we are seeing is the result of some damage. I do not believe the sword was made this way.

Another example of damage to the hilt is the missing additional rear guard. You can see where it was originally attached to the wrist guard, but is now completely gone. ElJay made my hilt with the additional rear guard in tact, to replicate how this sword would have looked when it was first made.

Thanks, Chris! This, I think, is very interesting. Did Eljay just make up his own design on how the wristguard should look?
Thanks for the pics! It looks very decently sized!

Hi Henrik

It doesn't appear that Eljay changed the wrist guard much, perhaps not quite as rolled but quite similar !
The main thing he did there, which does change the look of the wrist guard a tad, is to add the missing additional rear guards (which attach to it, and the rear guards)

Attached is a pic of the original with red lines drawn in to represent what I mean !

Hi Chris,

Congratulations to a fine addition to your collection. And a big tip of
the bonnet to Eljay for another job well done.

Alex
I disagree that this is a Stirling hilt. It bears all the characteristics of the Glasgow Hilt.
The Stirling hilts were more flamboyant.
