I've been fascinated by the story of the medieval peasant's republic of Dithsmarschen ever since I read the William Urban book about it a few years ago.
Recently as I've gotten back into reenactment I've become interested in the idea of portraying a Ditsmarscher soldier. Do we have any sources that give an indication of the kind of arms and armor they might have used? I know by the 15th century peasant and bourgois militias often fielded soldiers in much fancier armor than one might think when one hears the word "militia" but I don't know if this was the case in Dithsmarschen.
I'm most interested in portraying a soldier from the Hemmingstadt era (1500) but any sources of Ditsmarscher equipment would be interesting.
I know there is some detail in several entries on the Ditmarschen wars in both the Bremen Chronicle and the Hamburg Chronicle, both of which were transcribed into modern German in the 19th Century, though I don't know of any full English translation. There is however this book which is basically an abridged translation of those two chronicles plus the one from Lübeck, written in 1914.
I don't know if there are specific mentions of kit like armor and weapons, but there are several accounts of the different battles and various other incidents.Books and games on Medieval Europe Codex Integrum
