After a long time searching online and the meager reference collection I have access to right now, I cant find out what this specifically is. I believe it to be some sort of German hanger, but what age, I dont know. The blade has no makers marks. It has a simple single guard, and all the similar ones I have seen have a "P" shaped one. Has anyone seen this before? Is it in fact German as I suspect? Age?

There is a book on the soldier of the American Revolution by C. Keith Wilbur that includes 100's of amazing illoustrations. There is a portion about swords and blades, and there are several hunting swords with animal-head pommels that resemble yours somewhat. My guess would be a early-mid 18th century hunting sword. I love the pommel!

I looked in Neumann's "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution", but there wasnt anything exactly like it. I'm really stumped on this one.

I'm including a picture of what the book looks like. Unfortunately, I don't have a scanner, so I just found the cover online. Perhaps that will help. The illoustration in the book depicts a hunting sword similar in shape to yours, but with a bear head pommel, a chain knuckle guard rather than your solid one, and a curved, saber-like blade. I don't know much about swords from this (18th century) era, but hopefully this will be of some help. Happy

Hey Mike,

This was all I could find when looking through my pictures. I'm afraid that it is not of much help. I have seen pictures of hangers very similar to yours, you might want to post your hanger at Sword Forums Antique & Military Sword Forum.
