Does anyone know the legislation in Sweden regarding discovering historical artefacts? Surely there is some sort of compensation if an item is taken by the government, otherwise no one would declare finds? |
There is legislation, where you are required to hand in any finds, and will be compensated for the value.
However, how the value is calculated is another thing..
The law is easier applied to precious metal hoards, where the base price for gold and silver can be used.
If she gets compensated for x kg of scrap Iron, she might be a tad disappointed
You may be allowed to keep the find in some circumstances (the archaeological value is very small, and the find is of a type that the national museum already have tons of. Like stone axes, or pottery shards. A loose find of a sword, where there is no arhcaeological context to speak of, it's not impossible they will let her keep it. But then again, they might not.

Yes, finding the original is thrilling. However, from the perspective of a child, its can be disappointing to find something so exciting and have to give it away. Assuming that she liked the sword and showed interest in it, I'm glad that her parents are trying to have a high quality reproduction of it made, something she can keep and cherish.
If you were to dig up a medieval sword, would you want to give it away? I don't know about you, but I'd feel a bit crushed having to hand it over. |
Well, yeah. But I have two little girls, and they prefer the $20 pink plastic talking princess swords I got them at Toys R Us over my boring swords that they can't play with. Anyway, I hope Andrew, I mean Saga, enjoys his, I mean her new $8,000 sword.
I will shut up now.
