this is exactly my experience as well. In the heat of the moment you're just looking out the slit and just see your opponent(s). If you're used to your harness you work around things like a lack of lower vision wearing a sallet/bevor purely through instinct or experience.
I have a very nice recreation of the Lyle bascinet. The ocularia are about 7mm wide.

FWIW, all the breathes on the "snout" acutally allow for some decent down ward visibility. Not perfect, but better than might be expected.
