Please forgive my skeptical nature, but I recently said the same thing concerning a recently found Viking sword---it looks very 'crisp' to be an authentic medieval piece. Well done, no doubt there....but I'm going to say 19th or early 20th century repro. If it IS an original, it never saw a battle. Wink That would have been a rich man's *Saturday night special, grab your wench, and do a promenade about the castle 'round*.

Or....I could be completely blowing smoke. WTF?! That's just the way I see it. Worried .......McM

The guys on AA seem to think it's a fake http://forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB3/viewto...p;t=186583 so no argument from me.

I just showed a close-up of this to my wife....who knows NOTHING about armor. However, she is a near-professional seamstress. She concluded, just by looking at the way the lining is stitched, that it is a modern-era replica and purposely aged. Now, here's your two grains of salt to take with that-(..)-but I don't doubt her word a bit. I hope it IS authentic...I really do! But, the odds aren't looking too good. The perfectly round holes for an aventail appear to have never been used, suggesting that the helm was never actually fitted with one---much less worn---especially in battle. Worried So...be that as it may...your guess is as good as mine. Razz ......McM

No...that is not a real, antique bascinet. Lots of things are a tip off, most of them already cited here.
