|
|
Hello, I was hoping someone might be able to help me identify where this bayonet's origins are. I received it today for Christmas and I've been trying to figure out where it's from using the internet and I think it looks very similar to some Austrian bayonets but I'm not 100% sure.
The numbers next to where it says "Jun" are 56 as far as I can tell, just in case you can't see it in the photo. The word on the blade is also "Striber" as far as I can tell if that rings any bells (I could be completely wrong though).
Any help is appreciated, I hope the photos are good enough!

Welcome aboard and Merry Christmas
This appears to be a derivative of the British 1856 yataghan bayonet meant for the Enfield rifle and carbines. Others can probably better explain the markings but all I can figure is that it is later in use than the first models that had a rivet instead of a screw holding the spring. With the UK influences worldwide, I could easily understand why it might not immediately appear British.
Cheers

Yes, that looks like a match. The steel/iron scabbard and frog tab had me baffled, as is the quillon differences.

Okay cool!
I thought it looked very much a like to a lot of the Austrian bayonets, I just couldn't find much information on the markings to confirm that.
If it is actually Austrian that'd be great, that'd diversify my collection!
