Pompei Gladius dimensions
Hey guys, im wanting to make myself a Proper Pompei gladius and im having trouble finding actual measurements. Im trying to determine how wide/long the blade should be, as well as how acute the tip angle should be and the max cross section width. Id appreciate any info you guys have, i dont want to just go based off production swords because you never know if theyre just making up specs or if they are looking at real originals. Thanks
Hi Mercer, if you can get hold of a new 'Osprey' book: 'The Gladius', by Mike Bishop, one of the real experts on Roman arms and armour, you will find all the details you want - tables of dimensions taken from genuine finds. And not just 'Pompeii' type but 'Mainz' and ring-pommel types as well. Good luck.
Neil
awesome sounds like exactly what i need, thanks!
Here you can find the very famous Guttmann gladius blade dimensions (now in Royal Armouries, Leeds):

By the way, the new Deepeeka Pompeii blade (http://www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=...peii+Sword) is nearly spot on!
And if you're not into making scabbards - the scabbard on this one is a decent copy of the Nijmegen Pompeii. I have it (for the folks in Europe - bought from armae.com (FR) - online shop with an excellent service) and like it quite a lot.

Hope this helps.
