I just want to give the heads-up to people that Århus University press has as its monthly free ebook for november:

Danish Medieval Castles
Rikke Agnete Olsen
Århus University Press (2014)
.

Also this probably for many unknown book might be something for people interested in castles during warfare.

Castles at War.
Edited by Rainer Atzbach, Lars Meldgaard Sass Jensen & Leif Plith Lauritsen.
Dr. Rudolf Habelt GMBH, Bonn (2015)

This is the first publication of symposium papers in the book series "Castles of the North".
The Danish Castle Research Association "Magt, Borg og Landskab".
Interdisciplinary Symposium 2013 at Nyborg Castle.

Since they plan to hold a symposium every two years, we can look forward to the next book sometime in 2017?!

The articles are as following as I haven't found any place online that actually gives them:

Part 1. The Role of Castles in Political Strategy:

Aleksander Andrzejewski & Leszek Kajzer:
Castles of the Polish Nobility: A case study on the basis of the Family Koniecpolski of Póbog.

Knut Arsted:
The Use of Castles as Military Strongholds in the Norwegian Civil Wars of the 12th and 13th Centuries.

Felix Biermann:
Slavic Strongholds South of the Baltic at War.

Jan Kock:
Danish Castles and Fortified Cities During the 16th and the Beginning of the 17th Centuries.

Ieva Ose:
The Livonian War (1558-1583) and the Ruination of Castles, in particular Kirchholm and Wenden.

Carsten Selch Jensen:
Castles and War in 13th Century Livonia and Estonia. According to Henry of Livonia.

Claus Frederik Sørensen:
Nyborg During the Count's Feud (1534-1536) with a Closer Look Upon the City's Later Renaissance Fortifications.

Part 2. Castles During Warfare and Sieges:

Rainer Atzbach:
The Legend of Hot Tar or Pitch as a Defensive Weapon.

Vivian Etting:
The Fatal Siege of the Royal Castle in Stockholm (1501-1502) - The Beginning of the End of the Nordic Union.

Jesper Hjermind;
Three Castles at Hald: An Unfinished Earthwork and a Forgotten Siege - New Archaeological Investigations into the Medieval Fortifications at Hald.

Leif Plith Lauritsen:
The After Math of a Siege - The Castle and its Surroundings After a Siege. Based upon Local Assemblages from Lolland-Falster.

Peter Purton:
"Soffossores immiserunt ad subvertundum muros" - Mines and Miners in Medieval Siege Warfare.

Anders Reisnart:
The Siege and Storm of Lindholmen During the Second Hanseatic War (1368-1369).

Olaf Wagener:
Sieges, Siege Castles, and the Question of Visibility - New Research with the Help of LiDAR-scans.

The last article includes examinations of Castle Eltz & the Siege Castle Trutz-Eltz, Castle Dhaun & Castle Thurant all in the Rhineland-Palatinate.

I totally fell over this book by chance in my local museum bookshop. It has nice illustrations and the varied topics of the articles meant I learnt a lot of new stuff.

Thanks for these, Niels. In particular, I look forward to reading the first one, as I know next to nothing about Danish castles. Additionally, Danish castles should hold a special place in the hearts of many children worldwide: after all, the Lego is a Danish company, and the Lego Castle series is undoubtedly loosely based around the design and layout of real castles from Denmark.

I hadn't noticed this latest ebook, so thanks for this reminder though! Glad to see they are sharing books of interest... Rainer Atzbach has made his article in Castles at War available on Academia.edu, so perhaps others are or will eventually be available free of charge as well.

All the credit to you Mark - I just spread the word Wink
I figured you would see it, or I would have send you a mail. Really great that such a new book gets shared for free.
As with the articles maybe being free on academia.edu my list at least make it possible for people to search for these articles.
Purton's article of miners and mining/countermining warfare is pretty cool - especially compared to your work with the Hussite sieges!
It's focus is mostly England, where you had specialists hired for campaigns by the English Kings. So these are (well-)paid "free miners"
"Forest of Dean" iron-miners from Henry II (1154-1189) until Henry V in 1417, who employs coal-miners from Liege.
Especially at Harfleur (1415) the French successfully counter-mined the English mining attempts under the Duke of Clarence.
