Exactly what caught my eye Tim. Now, if you look very closely at some of the intermediate pictures above you'll notice that at one point the blade was mated to a slightly different pommel with less curvature. A bit of a mix up there! But it was spotted and corrected in time.

The sword is coming along really nicely. I worked with Maciej on a somewhat similar sword about 1.5 years ago and I think it turned out really really nice. I was going for an XI with a slightly atypical downward curved cross guard and brazil nut pommel...the pommel style is more of the bulbous almost tea-cosy variety than what is currently in play with your piece.

Looking great.

Wonderful sword Bryan - looks very handy. Mine will be more of a brute.

Here it is next to its sister in the process of final polishing. Maciej was having a one-day only two-for-one sale so I ordered both of them.......(just kidding!).

These two sisters look awesome!

I'm always blown away to see how beautiful Maciej's swords are, even during the making process. I ordered a sword and a falchion, I'm so excited to see them growing!

Classic Xa Brazil Nut. I don't know if its a commission or for sale. I'd go for it myself if I hadn't already commissioned the other sister.

thanks for your opinions.
the second norman sword is commissioned. but it is definitely one of my favourite type of sword and I will make them more soon - I need one too Happy
brazil nut pommels are very similar on both pieces, they were inspired by the same few original swords.

I've made a couple of significant non-sword related purchases this summer and I don't want to test Mrs. Awesome's awesomeness, or I'd definitely look into a commission. Maciej is one of the makers I MUST do business with in the future. I do so need a sword to go with my 11th century kit.

This project has taken another unexpected twist. Vulcan decided that the blade would turn out to be 1.5" shorter than expected. I'm used to things like this happening with custom projects so I said I'd be OK along with some compensatory adjustment to the grip. However, I guess Maciej is a perfectionist. He already made an extra pommel & guard, and now he's going to make an extra, longer blade. So I guess that in the end my sword will have another sister; this time a near-identical twin.

If you like the swords shown above, you can see the final versions on Maciej's web site, and the one with the curved guard is currently for sale: http://artofswordmaking.com/gallery/76/norman-sword-early-12thc

He's still working on replica 2.0 of the original sword I gave him; apparently it will be done fairly soon.

Here's Maciej's next batch. Mine (V2.0) is the big one 3rd from the left.

That looks great J.D.

I also see a few other blades in the group whose shape really grab my attention.

Indeed, I wouldn't say no to any of this lot. I particularly like the type N pommel, and one near the back with I pommel and type 2 cross.

Wow, so much greatness in that photo. I really like yours JD and the type N, but I could take all of those if I were able to.

I would go ahead with one on his site, but I am in line for a Leidnica Lake Ulfhberht from him, so I must conserve.....

Don't I? Eek!

Well I'm really excited to see yours and hear your thoughts. I think your patience will be worth it.

I agree about the Type N pommel one, been looking at a sword with one. I also like the one immediately to it's left. Looks like a nice hefty blade.

After some interruptions, I have an update on this project. Maciej has now completed two new versions of this sword.

The first is already on his web-site: http://artofswordmaking.com/gallery/108/norman-sword-12thc

The second will be done in a couple of days and is said to be very similar but a bit longer. Maciej has kindly offered to let me choose the one I like best, and then I guess the other one will be up for grabs!

This one has a blade length of about 34 and 1/2 inches. The next one is even longer? That will be a long singlehander - definitely a horseman's sword.needing as much reach as possible.

Here is the 3rd version of the sword, pictured against the 2nd version: http://artofswordmaking.com/gallery/110/norman-rider-sword-12thc

This last one has a blade 9mm longer (i.e., 35") and a grip 3mm shorter (3.7"). That's a cozy fit for my hand.

PS - I have confirmed on the longer sword, so I think the other one might be available.
