Always happy to see a new Burridge piece. This is a really neat style, one I'd like to have some day. Congratulations on one of the oldest swords in the world! Will you finish the hilting?

Hi forum mates
I have had this sword for a while now and I just got around to posting.
The sword was a gift from my wife for a 60 birthday present and I was not expecting it. A very big surprise!
The sword is from 9th century Dublin, Ireland - Viking era.
Some stats:
Overall length - 92 cm
Blade length - 73 cm
Guard length - 11 cm
Grip length - 9.2 cm
Hilt length - 19 cm
Hilt: Petersen / Oakeshott type D
Blade construction:
Two layers of pattern welding. The front side uses four rods, forming a twisted & straight pattern structure. The opposite side is constructed from two twisted rods. The edges are constructed from hand-smelted welded steel. The blade has many hardening marks.
Hilt & Pommel construction:
The guard & pommel are constructed from hollow cast bronze with silver & copper inlay, silver rings, & silver & copper twisted wire.
Grip construction:

It has been a long time since I was able to post something of my own here instead of just commenting on all of the great pieces that have been posted here since then.
I have not received it yet, it will hopefully be shipped from New York tomorrow and I will have this beauty in my grubby mitts by next week.

Here are some shots of a Viking two hander(I know - total fantasy) I purchased the bare blade years ago from John Lundemo at Odinblades years ago and never cared for the hilt that I came up with. Josh Davis at Davis reproductions agreed to tackle the project. The pictures show the waxes that Josh carved that will be cast in bronze.
I am extremely excited - Josh is also working up a wood cored scabbard and carrying system.

here is something from Darkwood Armory - one of their Ring Hilt With Shell hilt rapiers. I had them put on one of their Sidesword blades 36 inches by .125 wide. It is not a light sword, but then most originals were substantial pieces.

I really wasn't planning on buying another sword for a while. A long while. But I saw this rapier on A&A's muster page and, while I had no plans to buy it at the time, found myself frequently going back to check if it was still available. There are apparently only so many times one can talk oneself out of something. My last rapier was also an A&A muster find, so this seems to be developing into a habit with me. Bad Sam! No biscuit!
The sword is absolutely stunning. When I held it for the first time, I actually whispered a line from Princess Bride to myself; "I've never seen its equal." A&A's stats are:

The feel of the sword is definitely on the substantial side, making it perfect for rapier fencing in the Italian style. I do not believe it would have any difficulty in "finding the sword" and the blade width and sharpness of the edge make me think it could give quite a decent cut; not quite, but almost into sidesword territory. Aesthetically, the sword displays lovely file work on the guard and the most exquisite wire wrap I've ever seen them do.
I am immensely pleased with this purchase. Now I need to look into commissioning a scabbard of equal magnificence.

Manning Imperial Basic Messer. 6mm spine distally tapered, 22" blade. The basic furniture was to keep costs down as I wanted this as a bush blade to take into the outdoors. They also do a higher grade version with fullered blade and nagel etc
