Bishop Odo using it certainly cast doubt over the attitude that the club was a low status weapon.
Rather the mace/club could actually be a status symbol of authority (like the royal scepter), when it was wielded by a person which had authority.
A low status warrior wielding a club would still be low status, not because he wielded a club, but because HE was low status.
