This arrived last week from Tod. A dagger made in the late 15th/early 16th century German Landsknecht style. The hilt is bronze and boxwood, with a twelve-inch blade.

I really like these types of Landsknecht daggers with the asymmetrical guard: the ring being only on the one side. I like Tod's interpretation on yours with the flared boxwood grip!

Here are two additional daggers with the same type of guard.


#1: A German Landsknecht Dagger, circa 1510/20

Slender double-edged blade (pitted in places) with four fullers on each side. A brass filled heart-mark on one side. Short quillons of brass with a single grooved ring guard. Finely-turned fruitwood grip multiple grooves and a rondel design. Pommel plate is an engraved overlay of brass.

Overall length: 29 cm (11.4")



#2: Landsknecht Dagger, South German or Swiss, first half of the 16th century

All-steel hilt with six-sided conical grip and mushroom-shaped pommel. Ring guard on one side. Blade has multiple fullers on the front and is flat on the back.

Overall length: 27.5 cm (10.8"); Blade length: 16.7 cm (6.6")

That is outstanding Patrick! Great work from Tod as always! That grip is just gorgeous. The shape is really cool. Seeing pieces like this always makes me want to get some later period stuff....

Thanks Tim. I've stopped being so rigid in the things I collect in terms of historical era. I really think far too many people are taking this stuff way too seriously and have forgotten it's supposed to be fun. I now collect things I simply find interesting and pleasing. "In stock" also adds incentive. :D
