Removing black spots left by rust?
Hey everyone,

I have a helmet that was left unprotected for a few days. It got a good amount of rust on it, but I used the common products plus steel wool and was able to clean the rust off easily.

However, the rust left black spots, like small smudges, all over the steel.

How in hell do I remove that? If it's even possible...

Edit: They're not really black, but noticeably darker spots.
You could try Noxon, followed by polishing with Autosol (or similar).

I've never found anything that works quite as well as Noxon; if you're outside the US, many online sellers will still ship it internationally.
I would personally not worry too much about it and consider it natural 'weathering' :) Some sandpaper should remove it; start at something like 200 grit and work your way up if you want a higher polish. Personally I favour a satin or matte finish for metal. If you want it mirror-polished, you may need to bring out a power tool like a buffing wheel.

Sandpaper did work! I don't know why I hadn't thought of it.

I started at 150 and went to 300 and 600. It was clear clean after that.
