Just FYI ....

The Spring 2004 London Park Lane Arms Fair catalogue has a wonderful article entitled :
Problems and Pitfalls in the Identification of European Mail, by David Edge.
* and a certain well known sword company out of Minneapolis are mentioned in it as well ;-)

Copies can be purchased via Ken Trotman Ltd.

is the short cut in the center of the neck of the shirt pictured on the catalog Mac posted about intentional or is the shirt just missing some links? i have been having a difficult time lately trying to figure out how to effectively/efficiently adjust the tailoring on my own hauberk and wondered if it is a means of stress relief for the centermost top links.
Head Room
Seems to me that it would be a relief cut to allow the neck opening to accomadate the particular wearers head and what he may have on it at the time of putting on the shirt.

I agree. A mail shirt is no different than any other shirt. You need to have some way of fastening together the sides of the neck after your head has gone through, if you want it to have a collar size smaller than your head. Simple lacing would seem to work as well as anything to gather the edges at the neckline, once you have the split built into it.
