Did jewelled hilts exist in Europe between 11th and 16th C?
Howdy folks,

This may be a silly/basic question, but it's not something I'd really given much thought to and now I can't help but wonder. The Sutton Hoo sword is an eariler sword with a garnet-adorned hilt and I recall some later renaissance examples (though I have no idea whether they're genuine or not) but I have never seen anything in between. Can anyone shed some light on the matter?

Thanks!

Peter
There are medieval swords with pommels made from lumps of rock crystal, not sure if that meets your criteria for "jeweled"
Thank you! I think I might have heard of that before, but I've never seen one - I suppose it would qualify! I'll need to try and find some examples of that.
Very interesting threads, thank you for bringing them to my attention :D
