It might have something to do with the lamellar been made from layer over another layer, and maybe because of this it allows the armor to expand the impact and greatly reducing the force.
I think I've seen this tv show where a navy seal guy mentioned something about a new type of ballistic armor with a similar design of lamellar or some sort scale. It was called the "Dragon Skin". The armor in his presentation dispersed the impact from a 7.62X45mm and bunch other caliber and also the round didn't go through the armor.

You're absolutely right, David. In the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in the Netherlands there is secrete in the medieval collection which has a dent in it. Although the weapon/missile did not significantly piece the helmet, the wearer was almost certainly killed because that dished material gave way into the skull. So, one must always consider blunt trauma as well as penetration.

We're making DIY street armor from lexan, HDPE 55gallon barrel and you name it! LOL.... All tested with good real swords protective ability.
