Well here is the result of re-forging the shards. An 18" blade that is now called 'Shathur Zirak' in Tolkien's Dwarvish or 'Cloud Spike'. Named after the mountain Bandushathur (Cloudyhead) north of Moria. It has survived heat treat and is now just about to be hand finished. (the picture shows it with machine finish to 120). It will get a deep etch to ensure that the 15n20 stands out like a shiny beacon so as to invoke mithril. This is fun. And you see that I've begun re-working my old wrought iron type C fittings.. which I think work with this sword. It is a big, small sword for a big-hearted small warrior.

Still working out most details.. but I'm thinking black oak grip with silver ring... and probably some wire inlay on the iron.

Hey hey!--I really like the look of that little/big blade. The type C fittings seem to go well with it. Is the position of the upper and lower guards+pommel in the picture roughly the final size? It may look nicer to have a slightly smaller grip...

Yeah it is amazing how well those fittings look.. especially when you think of a short, stocky dwarf holding it.

No.. not final. I agree it would look better with shorter grip. I'm still working on the design but leaning towards two pieces of black oak divided by silvery spacer ring....

I was bummed when the blade Scott was working on when ping, I am really glad that some others have taken interest.

Such a shame about the mishaps, but the resulting sword is still gorgeous and no doubt a useful short range sidearm.

When you see how beautiful historically inspired and skilfully pattern-welded weapons can be, it makes you wonder why fantasy and historical films and games still go with silly, spikey, impractical and ugly fantasy swords that are totally OTT. The real deal is so much more impressive.
