New Sword or New Scabbard?
I suspect many of us go through the same internal struggle, do I save up for my next sword or save up for a custom scabbard to upgrade my existing sword(s)?

Pros and Cons, wild opinions? Random suggestions? Let's hear it!

Personally I'm considering a new sword or having my Del Tin longsword fitted with a custom scabbard with a new grip. A new sword might even be cheaper!
I voted for other.
IMNSHO if you are going to spend the money for a custom scabbard and anew grip the value of the sword should be at least approximating the scabbard and hilt.

Of course this assumes that you are going to Christian Fletcher or DBK or the like where the scabbard will cost considerably more than a Del Tin.

Good point in bringing up the relative cost. I paid around $380 for my sword about 10 years ago; sells new for $422. A custom scabbard with a matching hilt upgrade would cost me $300 at the least, so I could easily end up spending the value of the sword on a scabbard/belt set up.
Technically, I'm only in the market for new scabbards right now, but that's only because I've already purchased the swords to go in them. As a rule, every sword I buy will sooner or later get a snug little hobbit hole to protect it, and will be stored securely in the original box until then. Presently, I've a custom Albion and an A&A rapier both in need of gowns for the ball—the fruits of 2012's disposable income. Now the circle must be complete. :)
My swords hang on the wall, so I will be completing my collection first, and then getting them fitted for hobbit holes. So, for me, right now, its swords.

Also, I could make a passable scabbard, nothing like the premium pieces of art seen on the forum, but historical and functional. The same can not be said for swords.
I'd go for the scabbard, personally. I think a sword isn't complete unless it's well dressed, as well as the practical considerations of the blade not getting damaged or having the opportunity to get up to mischief. As much as I feel the pull of a new sword (ooh, shiny!) it's really only half the story...
I think there is a rule that a scabbard should not cost more than the sword it serves (though Merlin disagreed). Feel free to break that rule.

As good as that sounds, unless your sword comes with a scabbard any sword $250-300 or less is going to be without a scabbard.
I'd do a couple of new scabbards. I mainly carry my swords to RenFests, so having them toted in some cool bling would be nice. I'd make my own, though, before paying an arm and leg for a 'professionally' made scabbard. Buuut....a new sword or two wouldn't be kicked to the side either. ..........McM
