Decorative fabrics of the 14th century.
What type of decorative fabrics were available for use in the 14th century? I'm looking at a fabric to use as a mantle for an early 14th century great helm and a covering for an aventaille on my late 14th century bascinet.
It is going to be black, and I am thinking a golden floriated design, in a satin type finish.
Would that be period?
What kind of patterns would be available? Images would be awesome.
Also, would complex dagging be known in the early 14th century?

Thanks for any help. :)

Look up "fourteenth/14th century fabric" on Google Images and give yourself half an hour to sift through what you find. Focus especially on the Pinterest links and follow the leads from there. Last night I gave it a whirl and found dozens upon dozens of original Western European fabric pieces in a wide array of colors and decorative styles...

Embroidery. And lots of it! On silk, with silk thread and pearls. There are quite a few preserved, stolas, gloves and other religious garments in churches and cathedrals. That decoration should give you an idea of the level of decoration possible in the time period.

Check out this for a few examples:

Awesome sources, thanks! It looks like they could do just about anything within reason, really.
