I've noticed that quite a few modern depictions (color plates in books, etc.) show 15th century men-at-arms with some kind of heraldry or symbol applied directly to their breastplates. The question is, was it common to paint heraldry/livery colors directly onto the plate armor?

It was certainly done. No way to know how common the practice was.
