I noticed both this mystery object and another object (both pictured below) have identical intertwined bird designs in them. Is anyone aware of any more pieces from the hoard that also have this exact same design?
As an added bonus of global warming, a number of interesting items have appeared from melting glaciers. Amongst these are a tunic dated to 300 AD.

While no sword specifics as yet this site proves to be a treasure trove for life in the bronze age. They do mention some swords have been found so hopefully this will give us some nice context an structure to flesh out an idea of what life was like.

I've actually been present during the excavation. Amazing stuff! This is definitely going down into the history books. On the site, several bronze swords, daggers, spears etc. have been found, plus iron age swords complete with organic hilts and scabbards preserved intact (wood types have been identified). One bronze dagger even came out of the clay around the time we were there (but were just off site when it came above). Standing on the riverbed, it really felt like you were standing in the past, with only the water taken away.

Ah, I wish I could see the site from the descriptions and pics it sounds quite amazing. How large is the total area under excavation? The preservation levels seems to be off the charts for this age of material. One hopes the artifacts will be conserved and published in as timely as fashion as possible. We are really in a golden time of archeology as the amount and quality of finds has been very good.

This article mentions the boats being covered in extensive carving Peterborough Today Article Also a nice pic that gives some sense of size of boat and dig.
For those who have an interest in this type of thing and if you are into podcasts/email news and apps this is a very good one that overviews a lot of the current work going on around the world on a weekly to monthly basis. Stone Pages really good stuff here.

Maidstone Hoard
A viking/slavic burial group with great elements. Supposition is it may have been members of a royal guard of some sort for a local ruler. Good looking sword and decorative items.

They're pieces of the same object. The square plate goes on the right hand side of the larger piece.

Excellent. I love Migration era Lombard stuff.
Hopefully they've found treasures to rival the finds from Nocera Umbra and Castel Trosino.

Neil, I stumbled across that quote this morning. Like you, I thought it seemed appropriate to our times. Turns out I probably should have done a little more homework before posting it. It seems Cicero never said it. As far as I can tell it was in a novel about Cicero from the 1960's. My bad. :\
