Is that Boxwood, Jerry? At first glance I thought it was bone but then I saw the grain. It's beautiful. Did you wax it?

Well I have the photos in and the results are great, but I will consider the knives tomorrow morning and resize the pictures for posting and I will post up the result..................

Thanks for the positive feeedback.

Julien: I clamped the bolsters together with Vise Grips to hold them tightly to the tang and peened the pin. I soldered the bolsters afterwards as well. I did not get the tang as flat as I would have liked and I needed to fill the gap. Yes, the end cap was soldered. Thanks for noticing.


Sean: I used the Blackthorn wood. Yes, I did wax the wood after I sanded the wood to 800 grit. The wood did not have a great deal of variation in color. I added the pins in the handle to add interest because it looked too plain.

Firstly I would like to thank Jerry, Tim, Lloyd and David for taking part and seeing it through to the end and making such an effort.

I love the results and everyone has made a deeply personal and useable piece with great detailing and there is a really good standard of leatherwork throughout.

I will post up the pictures, but please feel free to comment as well, but I am really impressed. However we do need a winner for the pouch, belt and rondel and that has to be....................(drumroll)......................... Jerry Otahal

Congrats, Jerry, awesome knife!

In my book everyone is certainly a winner here - but especially Jerry. What strikes me is that you could stop any four blokes in a medieval street and this is the collection of knives you would expect them to be carrying.

This really encourages me to try this for myself, I'll even join Faceache just so I can wait for the announcement of the next competition (and I will Google bollocks right now to get some ideas).

Sean, you are correct, reading “Knives and Scabbards” and searching web sites for ideas was an education. I think I need to build another knife.
