Greetings gentlemen,
I'm making a role play system, and I would like to know all the types of attacks the following armor types are good against.
There's too, what the weapons that will inflict those attacks.
ARMORS:
- Gambeson Jackets
- Leather Armor
- Mail Armor
- Lamellar/Scale Armor
- Plate Armor
- Shield
POSSIBLE WEAPONS:
- Sword (some have better cutting than piercing)
- Spear (piercing attack)
- Mace/Club (blunt attack)
- Axe (cutting attack)
- Bows (piercing attack)
- Crossbow (piercing attack)
If you have any suggestions in what to add feel free to say it.

There's no weight system.
So, I should call it mail?
So blunt attack is impossible to resist?

If you read some of the sword tests available here and elsewhere, you'll find out maille isn't quite as effective against swords as some think. Nor is lamellar less effective than maille.

Dan - are their any reliable tests of scale/lammelar in comparison to mail?
I'm wondering if these might be about as resistant as mail, but heavier and less flexible.
Of course, any definition of "scale" is highly subjective as thickness and overlap could vary greatly.

Most of the so-called weapon tests agaisnt mail don't use a decent replica of historical mail nor do thhey simulate battle situations nor do they attempt to simulate how the armour was actually worn. Lamellar can be more protective than mail but it has to be heavier. My reply specifically stated that samples were of equal weight.

There isn't a single published study doing a direct comparison. SJG pulled together a lot of academics and re-enactors when playtesting GURPS Low-Tech and the above list was the result after over a year of debate. The amount of man-hours put into researching and writing the book is far and above that put into many peer-reviewed publications. The results are more than adequate for a game.

That's too bad. The results could be very interesting, and maybe help answer some questions about would one wear lammelar over mail, etc. etc.
