Petersen AE with trilobate pommel?
I've got a couple questions about the Petersen type AE hilt. Albion's description of the Knud (http://www.albion-swords.com/swords/albion/ne...g-knud.htm) states that the AE type has been found with a variety of pommel shapes including trilobate.

I really want to know what these look like. Were they two-part or single piece? Were the trilobe pommels on this type a regionally specific style? Any info on where to find an example?

Thanks.
Here's a picture from Kirpichikov's book of a later period trilobate sword. This is a Russian type that I would say is more similar to type Z than AE but I would imagine that a trilobate AE would be similar to this given the overlap in design during the time period. Note that it is peened all the way through. It's still two parts but it seems that many of the later two part pommels, especially in the east, were peened all the way through. I'd be interested to see an AE with a lobated pommel as well, if anyone has any pics to share!

Here's a simple paintshop version I made to get an idea of proportions. Look right?

Are you planning on making one of these? I have always loved that sword and it would be really cool to see someone make a replica. The photoshop pic looks pretty good, though the lobes of the pommel are not quite the right shape. Check out Baltu Kalavijai by Kazakevicius, a book on Lithuanian swords that has some examples that you may find interesting. Many of these Lithuanian swords have dramatically flared guards paired with various types of pommels.
Hey Scott,

I am planning on making a type AE hilt to fit a blank blade I bought. I was looking at the description page for the Knud and saw the reference to the the trilobate prommel, which fascinated me. I really think it would be a cool sword that few producers (if anybody) are making. I wasn't planning on reproducing any particular sword, just to make a generic one with a trilobed pommel. Thanks for the references, I'll check them out.

Myles-

I look forward to seeing what you make. A type AE is on my short list although I will do the "antennae" variant. Make sure to post pics once you finish!
Yeah, I can't wait to see it. An AE of some kind is high on my list of things to do too.
