Ranks and structure of the Marxbruder and Federfechter -- myArmoury.com

Craig Shackleton

Can anyone point me to some information on ranks and organizational structure of the Marxbruder and/or the Federfechter?

Right now I know that the Marxbruder had an elected captain (Hauptmann), and that they both certified longsword masters, and that's it.

Thanks for the link! There is a little more there than I had, although google's grammar leaves something to be desired. I'll have my German neighbour read it.

Interesting article... mentiones that the Marxbrueder and similar organizations were organized along the lines of guilds and that they certified masters and had a hauptman. Also refers to the way they certified new masters. That is all it says about rank structure.

Matt Galas in Belgium has published a few things about Franco-Belgian guilds, their practices and a bit about their structure. Its unlikely he'll soon find time to publish anything comprehensive, by his own admission. Practically any town of any size had at least one sword guild with substantial records surviving. Perhaps he will encourage a young scholar to study and publish more about these rich but relatively unmined resources? Until then, we have to enjoy the tidbits Matt finds time to write up and share with the community.

Too bad about Matt Galas and his schedule. I've been curious for some time about the Guild of St. Michael and other old fencing guilds in the Low Countries, but there's simply not that much information available about them yet in English (and even if I knew Dutch or French I might still have to travel there to get a peek at the charters and documents).
