French? Italian? What is it?
Was wondering about this sword. It looks like a French napoleonic sword or an Italian band sword but I have not seen one with this pommel. Overall length is 34" Thanks

Yes, this has the French first empire look to it. An infantry type of hilt and if the blade is intact (not shortened), most likely meant for an artillery, infantry or naval officer role. Way too fancy and regal to be a bandsman form. A careful look at the blade itself might reveal some marks. The general form could have been popular across Europe.

I have a few of these hilt types filed and the grips are often horn or ebony.

Cheers

Adding A horrible flash photo of Peter Tuite's good American Naval book (indispensable for American and other nation's swords) mentioning a couple of pretty ones.
