My search has whittled it down to a powder measure, but l'm not certain, it has no loops on it for carrying.

Hello all, l'm hoping that some kind person can idendify this item with a date and use, l found it yesterday whilst metal detecting.
My search has whittled it down to a powder measure, but l'm not certain, it has no loops on it for carrying.

While it could be a powder measure it could also be a lot of other things. Powder measures for charging muskets or rifles are generally going to be of a smaller diameter than 3cm. What reference material did you use to narrow it down to a powder measure?

The jury is out on its use, bird seed holder, powder measure, inkwell, candle holder??????? l dunno
Bird seed holders, as far as l'm aware have a flat back to them, and are larger, the shape of this would make it topple over if a bird was to nudge it, so l discount the theory. l found a 16th century bird seed holder many years ago and it's nothing like this item.
Powder measures tend to have mounting loops, this aint .
lnkwell, wrong shape.
Candle holder, l doubt it.

The metal detecting world doesn't seem to have an answer to this object, that's why l'm trying to do some research on the item. lt's great finding stuff, but even better pinpointing it's use and age.
