What do you guys think about it? I think this new hilt fits the blade much better than Hanwei type L one... It's a Petersen type H hilt made by Alojz Krišto, it has the correct two piece pommel construction but with tang peened over the top for easier repeening if the need arises... Fittings are steel with brass inlay in the grooves and twisted brass wire between the upper guard and the pommel. Grip is slightly shortened, it's 9cm now and the cross guard sits a bit more down the blade than the original one so the fuller start is closer to the guard now which looks more natural... I understand the pictures are not very good but the fittings are quite shiny and reflective so it's hard to capture their true color. I posted pictures taken under to different lighting conditions, the truth is somewhere in between... Wink

Hey Luka, very nice hilt. You said that the hilt has been shortened, (and this might be because its 3.25am here in Ireland) but to me it still looks a little on the long side. Anyway nice sword hope you enjoy it.

Hello,
It is a lot better than it was, but there are a few tweaks that could make it better. The grip must have been truly massive if 9cm is it reduced! The grip really should be under 7.5cm. The fullers generally do not terminate below the guard (taking a bit of metal off the shoulders, or sinking the blade deeper into the guard could mitigate this problem).
There are a few other problems with it... but most of those are not easily correctable.

The hilt components seem to be shaped well, a big improvement.

Cheers!

It still looks long because I have very small hands. I think 9cm is quite typical for a viking age sword. The original grip was 10cm, still not too big, but 9cm is much better if you don't have huge hands.

The grip was 10cm (4") and now it's 9cm (3.5"). 7.5cm (3") would I think be a bit too small. It might work for me because I have very small hands, but it would be too small for most people.
I agree about the fuller but I didn't want to shorten the blade, it's short enough already, 69.5cm (27")...
Btw, what other problems do you think about?

Not a huge fan of the blade but it certainly could be worse. Loving the hilt though. While the grip is a bit long, it's far from too long. Overall a very nice conversion. Happy

Sorry typo above. I meant under 8.5cm not 7.5... although 7.5 isn't out of the question for swords of this type either. I have seen grips on these swords go up to 10cm, it is just less common. The blade really does look a bit wonky... I'd get some work done on it if I were you.
Cheers!

Nice, Luka, I like it much better than the original sword. I like Anglo-Saxon hilts, but that particular one seemed a bit off. The inlay on your hilt furniture is terrific - something a real Viking would like. And less 'non-fuller' showing is an improvement.

Another good customization 'under your belt'. Keep it coming. Happy

Very nice! Superb craftsmanship.

I'd also love to see what he can do with this blade and a vendel/Carolingian age layered hilt.

If I ever buy another Saxon, or just the blade, it will be mounted with Vendel era ring hilt fittings.
