What do scabbard makers use to seal leather?
Many of the scabbard makers out there ship their leather covered scabbards all shiny and glassy looking. I was wondering what you guys use to get that effect.

Is it shoe polish? Normal wax?

Is there a period correct substance I can use to get that effect?

I've been sealing my scabbards with tallow, and that makes them water resistant, but not shiny.
I don't have an answer for period products, but I use paste wax, or this product:

The above is also available in a gloss finish. You can get the leather pretty shiny using even the satin finish.

If you look about 2/3 of the way down on my page you will see a (not too good) shot of my black scabbard, it is pretty shiny. This was finished with the satin shene, the other two finished scabbards below that are finished with paste wax.

I like Eco-Flo Satin Shene, too.
