I am getting a used A&A munich guard sword.... and I sorta wanted to get a matching dagger. How common was it for these swords to have a matching dagger? Would it have looked like the MRL one very much? I am not to concerned about the quality of the MRL dagger as I plan on paying someone to fix it up.... anything specific I should have them do?
Thnx

It would have been very common for a more-or-less matching dagger to be carried with this sword, typically suspended horizontally in the right small of the back, grip to the right. The Germans of this period didn't use buckler but did use the steel target and left-hand dagger. The weapons would not necessarily have been perfectly matched, so I don't think you'd have to worry about that. I've thought about getting the Windlass dagger to pair with my Town Guard sword, too. It's not bad as-is, and could certainly be improved. If you want something distinctive but still historical, you could have your craftsman turn the quillons forward a bit, like some of the examples below (Wallace Collection). You could also have the craftsman grind/file the pommel to be flatter, like that of the Town Guard. There are dozens more parrying daggers of this period at the WC site.

Just noticed this slightly-off Hanwei on clearance at KOA. This one looks better, I think:

I would prefer the Hanwei hilt on the WIndlass blade, but the Hanwei ricasso isn't out of the question.

Would it be accurate if I got the hanwei and had the guy add some holes to the ricasso like on the MRL?
Thnx

Oh also do you know the quality of that hanwei dagger, is it on par with windlass? I have heard they use plastic grips and zinc guards and stuff, and that their blades snap. Is this true, or are they more on par with MRL?
Thnx again

Hello,
If you are paying to get it upgraded anyway... this might be a very good option. http://www.darkwoodarmory.com/index.php?main_...cts_id=196
I don't know when he says "can be fitted with a hanwei blade for extra savings" if he means a blunt or a sharp, but Scott could probably do a sharp if you asked.
Cheers,
Hadrian

No experience with Hanwei, but I've heard the same things. If I wanted a "turnkey" piece I'd get the Hanwei but being unable to own anything without tinkering with it, I think I'd get the Windlass--I know pretty much exactly what I'm getting, and how easily it can be modified. I'd bet that the well-modified Windlass would beat the stock Hanwei on looks and build, though the stock Hanwei looks better than the stock Windlass.

They use synthetic grips (resin?) on some pieces, which in some cases can be stronger than wood. I've not heard of them using zinc guards. Some of their pieces use a stainless steel for hilt components.

The reports I've personally of snapping blades are old and date back to Hanwei's first foray into the Euro replica market. I believe it was widely reported on the net that one of their rapier blades snapped because of bad heat-treat. I haven't heard similar reports recently that I can recall, though they may be out there somewhere.

Happy

That is Scott's fencing dagger so the blades are blunt. Scott can make an excellent example of an historic sharp as well.
