Looking for opinions if this looks about right for a Type I. It handles pretty well but I am still trying to get its weight down just a hair more...

I combined the basket from a MRL type I, new blade from a Hanwei Tinker single hand and reamed out the pommel (MRL) to fit on to the tang so it wont turn and fits tight..

I have been grinding down some of the areas of the basket to get the overal weight down as they were overly thick in areas that don't need that much...

Also made a new grip ribbed and covered in leather.

Blade is 31 inches and POB is at about 3 1/4 inches overall weight is at 3lb.

Still working on making a scabbard which will come soon...

It looks excellent! Though I don't know enough about Schiavonas to know if the blade is right.

If I may ask, who made the basket and where did you aquire it? I've been looking for a less expensive Schiavona replica and the type 1 is my favorite type.

An update for the old Windlass hilt for sure but I wonder about the blade combination with that hilt. I keep going back to a 20th century naval basket and pulling it apart along with an old XVIIId sword I have and stuffing the two periods together. Laughing Out Loud

This schiavona frankensword collaboration works ok for me but just so wrong in a good way, if you know what I mean. A narrower and slightly longer blade would look a bit less out of place. The not so long ago German backsword sword's blade would be quite nice with that hilt (but at the other extreme of length). I have always kind of liked the look of the old Windlass schiavona fittings.

Cheers
